Summary Content

Your home movie reels hold once-in-a-lifetime moments, family gatherings, milestones, and stories that deserve to be seen again. Over time, 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm film can fade or become unwatchable. At Ty Reynolds Video, we bring those memories back to life with professional film to digital and film to DVD conversion, completed entirely in-house at our Calgary studio.

Since 1995, our technicians have used precision frame by frame scanning to capture every detail directly from the emulsion side of your film. This method eliminates projector flicker, preserves true colour, and ensures smooth, stable playback. Every reel is cleaned, balanced, and digitized using calibrated equipment, never outsourced or mailed away.

Whether your reels have been stored for decades or recently rediscovered, our process protects the integrity of your originals while transforming them into high-resolution digital files that can be viewed, shared, and archived for generations. From single family films to extensive archives, Ty Reynolds Video delivers clarity, care, and confidence in every transfer.

Preserve Your Family Film With Calgary’s In-House Film-to-Digital Experts

Film reels deteriorate over time, making it difficult to enjoy or safely view your original footage. Digitizing them protects your recordings from further wear, restores easy access, and makes sharing simple across computers, televisions, and mobile devices. With high-resolution scanning, proper emulsion-side capture, and expert handling, your home movies are transformed into long-lasting digital files that can be backed up, archived, and enjoyed for generations.

Film Formats We Digitize in Our Calgary Studio

  • 8mm Film: Classic home-movie reels from the 1930s–1960s. Often includes family gatherings, milestones, and childhood footage.
  • Super 8 Film: The most common home-movie format from the 1960s–1980s. Known for brighter images and longer recording times.
  • 16mm Film: Higher-quality film used for weddings, events, educational videos, and semi-professional projects.

Unsure of your format? Bring your reels in & we’ll identify them and recommend the best transfer method.

Why Frame-By-Frame Scanning Gives Calgary Families the Best Film-to-Digital Results

Many film transfer services still use projection systems, which introduce flicker, uneven exposure, soft focus, and cropped edges. These methods can also stress aging film.

At Ty Reynolds Video, we use true frame-by-frame scanning for all 8mm, Super 8, and 16mm reels. Each frame is captured individually from the emulsion side — the part of the film where the image is formed. This preserves detail, improves colour accuracy, and produces cleaner, steadier results.

What This Means for Your Memories

  • Full-resolution capture for maximum clarity
  • Smooth, flicker-free images
  • More accurate colour reproduction
  • Better detail in shadows and faces
  • Safer for fragile film, reducing mechanical stress

All Scanning Done In-House at Our Calgary Studio

Your film never leaves our possession. Every reel is cleaned, scanned, balanced, and exported onsite using equipment calibrated for:

  • 8mm
  • Super 8
  • 16mm

This ensures consistent quality control, safe handling, and complete transparency throughout the process.

How Our Film-to-Digital Process Works

  1. Film Check-In & Format Identification: We review each reel, confirm format (8mm, Super 8, or 16mm), assess condition, and explain the recommended digitization approach. Unlabeled or mixed reels are sorted for you at no extra cost.
  2. Cleaning & Preparation for Safe Scanning: We gently clean the film to remove dust and debris, check for loose splices or warping, and ensure the reel is ready for a smooth scan.
  3. Frame-By-Frame Emulsion-Side Scanning: Each frame is captured individually using calibrated scanning equipment. This eliminates projection flicker, preserves detail, and protects fragile film.
  4. Manual Colour & Brightness Balancing: Your footage is reviewed and lightly corrected for brightness and colour consistency while maintaining the original film’s authentic look.
  5. Final Output in Modern, Shareable Formats: Choose MP4 (recommended), MOV, or DVD for playback on computers, TVs, and mobile devices. Files are labeled, organized, and delivered via USB, external drive, or secure cloud link.
  6. Return of Your Original Film Reels: Every reel is returned to you, labelled and organized. Because the entire process stays in-house, you always know where your film is and how it is being handled.

Typical Timelines

  • Small film projects: 1–2 weeks
  • Standard family collections: 2–3 weeks
  • Large archives: Timelines vary; multi-decade projects are common

You will receive a clear, honest timeline after your film is assessed. There is no rushed work and no false promises.

Preserve Your Memories With Calgary’s Trusted Digitizing Studio

Legacy media is irreplaceable. Whether you are converting video tapes, film reels, audio recordings, or creating professional disc copies, choosing the right studio matters. At Ty Reynolds Video, every project is completed in-house in our Calgary studio using calibrated equipment and a careful, consistent process. We handle single items, full archives, and multi-format collections with the same level of care and attention, ensuring your originals are protected and your digital files are created to last.

YOUR FILM TO DVD OR DIGITAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

We digitize 8mm, Super 8 (silent or sound), and 16mm film. These formats cover most home-movie reels recorded from the 1930s through the 1980s. If you are unsure what format you have, bring your reels to our Calgary studio. We will identify them for you and recommend the best transfer approach.

Most projects are completed within two to three weeks, depending on the number of reels and their condition. Smaller jobs may take one to two weeks. Large archival or multi-decade family collections may require additional time. Because all scanning is done onsite in our Calgary studio, your reels remain safe and accounted for throughout the entire process.

We use true frame-by-frame emulsion-side scanning rather than projection-based transfers. This captures each frame at full resolution and avoids flicker, blur, cropping, and washed-out colour. Every reel is digitized onsite using calibrated equipment chosen specifically for your format to ensure clean, steady, accurate results.

Often, yes. Many reels with dust, light scratches, loose splices, or mild warping can still be transferred safely. During check-in, we inspect your film and explain what results you can expect based on condition. If repairs are needed before scanning, we will discuss those options with you.

Our standard delivery format is MP4, which works on computers, televisions, and mobile devices. We also offer MOV or AVI for archival needs, along with DVD options that include custom menus, music, and printed disc labels. Files can be delivered by USB, external drive, or secure cloud link.

Tell Us About Your Project

Whether you are digitizing a single tape or organizing a full family archive, we make the process simple from the very beginning. You can list the formats you have, share a few details, or describe the materials as best you can. If you are unsure what you have, that is completely fine. We identify tapes, reels, film, discs, and audio formats every day.

All digitizing is completed in-house at our Calgary studio, and your originals always remain safely in our care. Send us a message and we will follow up with clear next steps, timelines, and file delivery options.
